Over-the-counter nonpermit-tags for elk are available for some hunt areas

Over-the-counter elk nonpermit-tags are now available (at Arizona Game and Fish Department offices only) for 2008 for very specific locations where the Arizona Game and Fish Department is attempting to create areas with few or no resident elk.

These areas were identified through public process as places where elk did not occur historically and their continued occupation could negatively impact other wildlife or land uses.

Elk numbers in these hunt areas are very low; therefore, hunt success is expected to be very low. However, one advantage of these hunts is that they afford the opportunity to hunt with friends, which hasn’t always been possible because of the difficulty in getting drawn for draw hunts.

Hunters need to be attentive to the hunt area boundaries, as they are different in most cases than the unit boundaries. See below for a downloadable informational handout that provides information on boundary descriptions, season dates, frequently asked questions, maps, and other information.

Some of these areas, particularly in Units 4A and 4B and the Verde Valley, have significant amounts of private property. Hunters who obtain these over-the-counter elk tags should make sure they contact the property owner and obtain permission before hunting on private land.

These hunts will not affect your bonus points but do count toward your one-elk-per-calendar-year bag limit.
