Region 3 - KingmanThe Kingman region generally has average small game opportunities. Of particular interest to small-game hunters will be cottontail and Gambel’s quail. Water sources will be critical to dove and waterfowl hunters.

Cottontail – Generally good to excellent, but may be average in some parts of the region in drought years. Desert grasslands and foothills make for ideal hunting locations although cottontails can be found just about anywhere.

Quail – May have some of the better quail hunting in the state. Quail numbers are heavily dependent on winter and spring rains. When the Kingman region has adequate rainfall to provide seeds and insects necessary for continued population growth throughout much of the area, quail hunting will be at its best.

Throughout the region, the best hunting areas include the slopes and flats of mountain ranges, major washes, and drainages. Populations are present ranging from the Prescott area northwest to Kingman and the Hoover Dam, and southeast of Kingman in the Wikieup and Alamo Lake areas. Hiking into these areas a short distance will improve success. Although not necessary for a good quail hunt, having a bird dog along can help your success as well.

Mourning Dove – After several years of trichomoniasis in the northern parts of the region the dove population is still below historic levels. Outbreaks have not been observed recently and populations have the potential to recover. Hunters should focus on areas with water when hunting doves.

White-winged dove and Band-tailed pigeon – Neither bird is common in the region, with small populations in hunt units 18A and 18B. The band-tailed pigeon populations are reported to be fair at best in units 17A, 17B, and 20A. As with the mourning dove, finding a permanent water source will provide the best results.

Tree Squirrel – There are few areas in the region to hunt tree squirrels. Units 10, 17A, 17B and 20A have populations. Hunt in areas with large stands of conifers.

Chukar – There are few areas in the region to hunt chukar and it is not commonly hunted. Chukar can be found in an area northeast of Kingman (Unit 15A) and outside Seligman.
