Arlington Wildlife AreaFool Hollow Lake Recreation Area comprises 800 acres of cool high county opportunities for the entire family. The area is located just north of Show Low Arizona [N34° 15; 55”; W110° 04’ 24”], in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest at around the 6,330 foot elevation. It can be accessed via several Show Low city streets, most notably E. Linden Road, N 16th, N 22nd, or N 32 Avenues. It was opened in 1994 and offers year around camping, boating, and wildlife viewing activities. It is a result of a partnership between the Arizona State Parks Department, the U.S. Service, the Arizona Game & Fish Department and the City of Show Low.
Recreational Opportunities:
Fool Hollow Lake provides an array of recreational opportunities including camping, picnicking, boating and fishing, and wildlife viewing. The area includes a 150 acre lake that is surrounded by 100 foot tall pinion pine trees and is home to a variety of cool and warm water fishes. As well as the lake itself, there are starches of riparian habitat that provide excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
 
Directions:

From Show Low, travel west on W. Duece of Clubs and turn right onto E. Linden Road. Travel for about 2.5 miles and turn right. Take the first right (about .7 miles) and the destination will be on the left.

Entrance Fees:

April 1st trough October 15th = $7/vehicle (1-4 adults).
October 16th to March 14th = $3/vehicle or individual on Bicycle.

Visitor Center/Ranger Station/Restrooms:

April 1st trough October 15th = 8:00am to 4:30 pm.
October 16th to March 31st = 8:00am to 11:00am and again from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.
Clean, handicapped restrooms are available.

Day Use:

Picnic site are available. Ramadas are available for planned events for $15 non-refundable. They have picnic tables, charcoal grill(s), serving tables, electricity and restrooms. There is a $50 dollar fee for the first 25 people plus $2 dollars per car. Two playgrounds are located in the vicinity. Day use is hours are from 8 am to 8 pm.

Camping:

Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area offers 31 non-hook-up sites that include concrete pads, fire rings, and picnic tables. These sites are limited to two vehicles and 8 adults per site. There is a $17 dollar fee for these sites.

There are also 92 RV sites, compete with 30 amp electrical hook up (some 50 amp sites are available). Water hook-up are available at these sites and they can accommodate 40 foot long vehicles. A maximum of 2 vehicles and 8 adult are allowed at these campsites. There is a $30 dollar fees for these sites.

Hiking and Swimming:

There is a 1.5 mile hiking trail along the lake. Access to the 103 miles of the White Mountain Trial System is available within 15 miles of the Recreation Area. Swimming is allowed from the shore or from boats, but there is no designated or patrolled swimming area.

Boating and Fishing:

Both shoreline and boat fishing are available. Boat ramps are located on the east side and west side of the lake. Gasoline engines are limited to 10 HP. Non-motorized craft are also welcome. Fish species present include channel catfish, bluegill, black crappie rainbow trout, walleye, northern pike and small and largemouth bass. All Arizona boating laws apply. Fishing is allowed for licensed fishermen (age 14 and up). There are 5 fish cleaning stations.

Wildlife Viewing:

The area includes pine forest, wetland/riparian, and lacustrine habitat which provide viewing opportunities for numerous species. Water fowl such as various ducks and geese, herons, egrets and ibis are present seasonally. Neo-tropical birds such as bluebirds, goldfinches and Stellar’s jays are also present seasonally. Wintering bald eagles and summering ospreys and goshawks can be seen. Common mammals would include various squirrels, raccoons, beavers, and even elk and deer. Reptiles include various lizards and king snakes. Be careful where you walk because black tailed and western diamondbacks occur here too.

Management:

The Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area is managed by the Arizona State Parks Department through a multi-party agreement between that agency and the Arizona Game & Fish Department, U.S. Forest Service, the City of Show Low and the McCarty Construction Company.
